Coaches honored for their commitment

Coaches Matt Shedlock and Shawn Kelly '05 received the Fourth Annual Carol Feltz Bluhm ’80 Award on Friday, Feb. 22, during halftime of a varsity girls basketball game against Hillsboro in the Brick Oven.

The award, named for a standout alumna who lost her battle against cancer in 2014, recognizes teachers who go “above and beyond” while coaching, moderating, or leading an activity sanctioned by the Oregon School Activities Association. Those honored embody the mission of Lasallian education and demonstrate integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship.

Shedlock, an English teacher, is head coach of the JV football team and an assistant baseball coach.

Kelly, an instructional assistant and La Salle alum, is an assistant coach for the football and track teams.

Both educators show the kind of commitment that Feltz Bluhm -- a four-year varsity athlete, yearbook editor, and student leader during her years at La Salle -- wanted to make sure the school recognized, said Andrea Burns '97, Vice President of Foundation & Major Gifts.

"In the Lasallian tradition, Matt and Shawn are like great big brothers to our young men," said Athletic Director Chris George '97. "They do an excellent job of nurturing relationships, provide honest feedback for students and demonstrate passion, excitement and attention to detail."
