FREE Play Smart Youth Heart Screenings for Youth Aged 12-18
Dates:  May 10, 11, 14  8am - 3pm
Location:  La Salle Prep

In an effort to protect the hearts of area middle and high school students, Providence Heart Institute's Play Smart program will offer free painless, noninvasive heart health screenings to youth age 12-18 from 8 am-3 pm on May 10, 11, and 14 at La Salle Prep at 11999 SE Fuller Road in Milwaukie.

The heart checks, which will include measuring blood pressure and performing an electrocardiogram (commonly known as an EKG), will take less than 10 minutes each. The screenings are open to all children 12- to 18-years-old as long as their parents grant permission. Children do not need to attend La Salle Prep to participate.

"We want to reach as many kids as possible and make sure their hearts are healthy and strong," said Lydia Hibsch, manager of Providence Play Smart.

According to the institute, young people with undiagnosed heart defects, especially athletes, are susceptible to sudden cardiac arrest. Often there are no advance signs or symptoms and most routine physical exams do not pick up the defects. The average age of sudden cardiac arrest in young people is 17 years old.

In the past five years, Play Smart has screened more than 22,659 youth. Of those screened, Play Smart identified 1,259 -- or 6% -- for follow-up treatment.

To participate in the screenings, every child must have these two forms completed:
Parents may get their height, weight, and blood pressure checked during the screenings. Contact Chris George for more information.
