Service Learning
The mission and culture of the Lasallian school community strives to promote the gospel values that Jesus demonstrated through his ministry. Jesus' life calls and challenges every member of the Lasallian community to respond to the needs of others, especially the poor and marginalized, through works of service.La Salle's Service Learning Program strives to awaken a sense of social responsibility in all students, especially the most privileged, and to assist them in responding to the Gospel call of Christian service. The Service Learning Program encourages students, whenever possible, to deepen their personal sense of responsibility for the needs of those outside of their immediate community, the poor and marginalized, and helps them recognize service to those less fortunate than themselves as an opportunity to serve God.
We think there's more to service than "required hours." Meaningful service involves more than simply tracking hours. The Service Learning Program includes two components:
- Students working together with their classmates during class time on various service projects related to the curriculum
- Students performing individual service
Service experiences at La Salle enable students to put their faith into action and include faith sharing and prayer; individual reflection; and lessons in community building, simple living, and social justice. We believe that this helps create intelligent, caring, academically prepared leaders who understand the value of community and the rewards that come from giving of oneself.
